Menstrual Disorders

Menstrual Problems

There are several menstrual disorders affecting women throughout the reproductive years ranging from heavy periods (menorrhagia) to irregular (oligomenorrhea) or absent periods (amenorrhea).

Painful periods (dysmenorrhoea) can also cause significant disruption to daily life and all of these can be investigated and treated providing significant relief of symptoms.

Heavy Periods

For women with heavy periods there are a range of possible causes and options for management. Heavy periods can lead to anaemia, tiredness, and social isolation during the heaviest days.

For some women investigations may be required to identify the cause. Once a diagnosis is made, the options for management can be discussed and arranged.

Bleeding at Other Times in the Menstrual Cycle

Bleeding can occur between periods or after sex. The causes may be hormonal or local problems on the cervix or within the uterus. These problems require a clinical examination and investigation to determine the cause and appropriate treatment.

Bleeding around menopause

Any increased blood loss around the time of menopause or bleeding after 6-12 months with no periods should be checked out. An ultrasound investigation and other tests are arranged to exclude any underlying medical problem.

Investigations include blood tests and ultrasound scans, hysteroscopy, or laparoscopy. Possible treatments include the oral contraceptive pill or other hormone therapy, a Mirena® or endometrial ablation or ultimately some women may benefit from a hysterectomy. We can discuss which treatment is best for you.
