What is a Hysterectomy?

A hysterectomy is a surgical procedure involving the removal of a woman’s uterus, and in some cases, the cervix, ovaries, and fallopian tubes. This surgery can be performed to treat many different problems, such as heavy bleeding, pelvic pain, fibroids or cancer. After a hysterectomy, you will no longer have periods and you can no longer become pregnant.

There are Different Types of Hysterectomy:

This involves the removal of the entire uterus, including the cervix.

In addition to removing the uterus, this surgery includes the removal of the ovaries and fallopian tubes.

Hysterectomies are Performed for Various Medical Reasons, Including:

Uterine fibroids
Noncancerous growths in the uterus.

A condition where tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus.

Uterine prolapse
When the uterus slips from its normal position into the vaginal canal.

Abnormal vaginal bleeding
Such as heavy or prolonged periods.

Chronic pelvic pain
Unexplained pain in the pelvic region.

Certain types of cancer
When the cancer affects the uterus, cervix, tubes or ovaries.
