Endometrial ablation is a surgical procedure that removes the inside layer (the endometrium) or lining of the uterus.
It is one of the recommended treatments available for Heavy Menstrual Bleeding (HMB).
Your Bloom Gynaeocologist may recommend you consider an endometrial ablation if you have periods so heavy that the bleeding may be so heavy that it affects your daily activities and causes a low blood count (anemia) because of it.
Endometrial ablation is typically performed under a light general anaesthetic. Your doctor may first perform a hysteroscopy – which involves examining the inside of your uterus with a narrow telescope. Removing the tissue is performed using different methods and will depend on your specific symptoms and medical history.
Your Bloom Gynaecologist will explain to you in detail about the procedure they recommend and answer any questions and address any concerns you have.
Following an endometrial ablation there are four possible outcomes:
It takes between 3 and 6 months for the scarring of the uterine lining to become effective. Therefore, it is possible that you may have heavy periods initially, though these become lighter as time progresses.
